'Green campus' design for 700 students
Elifsu Selçuk and Dilara Kavas, who study at the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), carried out environmental projects for the campus of TED Izmir Private School in Urla Zeytinalanı, where approximately 700 students are educated. Focusing on the school yard in their 3-month work, Selçuk and Kavas designed a hobby garden for students. Young designers have also developed sitting areas and green areas suitable for different uses, using wood materials and plants that clean the polluted air. IUE students, who also specially designed for the 14-meter-wide wall in the school yard, used interactive panels on the wall, where students can draw pictures, write, hang posters, as well as plants.
Elifsu Selçuk and Dilara Kavas, 3rd year students of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, started their studies upon the request of Açalya Öralay, the Founding Representative of TED İzmir, for the preparation of the "green wall" and "vertical garden" project in the campus. Selçuk and Kavas, who took the Landscape Design course at the University, carried out their study under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Dr. İpek Kaştaş Uzun, landscape architect and faculty member at IUE. While young designers were admired for their project, TED Izmir decided to implement the "green wall" project prepared by the students in the first place.
THEY MADE A DIFFERENCE
Stating that students made a difference with their ideas and projects, Asst. Prof. Dr. İpek Kaştaş Uzun said, “We attach great importance to the fact that our students receive qualified education as well as taking part in projects where they will apply what they have learned and gain experience. Our collaboration with TED Izmir Private School is a good example of this. My students worked very hard on the project, despite the intensive course load and pandemic. Very good results came out. I would like to congratulate them.”
LIVELY, REMARKABLE AND HEALTHY AREAS
Elifsu Selçuk and Dilara Kavas said, “We visited the campus of TED Izmir and consulted with Emsal Orhan, TED Izmir Human Resources, Quality and Editorial Manager about which area should be evaluated and how. The school has a large yard. We put ourselves in the shoes of the students there and created our designs accordingly. We created lively, remarkable, and environmentally friendly areas. For example, we chose evergreen plants called baby’s tear plants, ferns, and sedum albums for the wall in the schoolyard. We preferred recyclable materials and wood, not plastic materials for the areas in the schoolyard. It was a great experience for us. It is also a great feeling to do something useful for students.”
